A HOMELESS pooch is hoping to sniff out a new owner at a special Talking Dogs Scentwork workshop in Redditch this Saturday, August 11.
Pedro the lurcher cross has been at Wythall Animal Sanctuary since January 2017 and has been continually passed over by people looking for a faithful friend.
“He keeps being overlooked – whether it’s because he has a bit of Staffie in him I don’t know but he is a lovely dog,” said Wythall animal carer Beckie Cordwell.
Taking pity on him, Sharon Edwards of Lakeside Dog Training Centre decided to invite him for a day out at her next course.
“Talking Dogs is an organisation developed from Customs and Excise training for dogs to sniff out explosives or drugs,” said Sharon.
“A programme was developed so that any dog of any breed can be taught in a similar way except they’ll be sniffing out catnip or cheese.
“It’s really beneficial for the dog and the owner.
“Dogs see their whole world through their nose and it is very tiring but satisfying for the dog while at the same time building a bond with the owner as they are working as a team.”
Pedro ended up at Wythall after his owner had a new baby and was unable to give him the time and attention he needed.
He was re-homed but had to be returned because, although he got on well with the owner he had trouble if other dogs started pestering him.
He has since been muzzle trained and will happily walk alongside dogs with his muzzle on, said Beckie.
