Diamond Bus manager asks residents to support her 8-mile walk for Alzheimer’s Society

THE operations manager of Diamond Buses in Redditch is calling on people to support her as she does a Memory Walk for the Alzheimer’s Society this Sunday, October 28.

Chris Bridges will be joined by family and friends as she does the Redditch circular No58 bus route in a bid to raise as much money as possible.

“The buses will have collection boxes in them for the duration of the walk and I hope people won’t throw their dead tickets in them, but give a bit of money instead,” said Chris, who lives in Redditch.

The walk, just over eight miles long, will be personal for Chris too as her husband was diagnosed with vascular dementia two years ago.

“By taking part in the Alzheimer’s Society Memory Walk I want to raise awareness so people can find out more about dementia and where to get help and support if someone they know is diagnosed,” said Chris.

The charity says a million people in the UK will have dementia by 2021 and has warned that people in the West Midlands are sleepwalking into a care crisis as people don’t appreciate ‘the catastrophic costs’ of dementia care, with many in the region believing it is free on the NHS.

“I don’t know how many people will turn up to support us, but Councillor Bill Hartnett says he’ll be along to wave us off, which is really good of him,” said Chris.

“I’ve raised about £350 so far and I’m hoping we can break the £500 barrier on the day.”

Chris will be setting off from Redditch Bus Station at 10am on Sunday morning, heading up Unicorn Hill and then down Easemore Road on the No58 circular.
