Council taxes up as County Hall backs 3.99 per cent increase for residents

THE County Council in Worcestershire has approved a 3.99 per cent increase in its council tax take today, Thursday, February 14.

It adds an extra 93p per week onto the bills of an average Band D property.

Of the increase, 2.99 per cent will go to support the authority’s programme while one per cent will be ringfenced to help pay for adult social care.

The budget will see the council spend millions of pounds invested into tackling congestion and upgrading railway stations across the county.

A further £2.5million has been earmarked for improvements to Evesham, Redditch, Stourport and Worcester town centres with the cash for Redditch likely to go on extending the paving already completed in Alcester Street.

However despite the county’s revenue funding increasing by more than £6m in the next financial year this is still not enough to keep keeping up with the increase in demand for social care.

A county spokesperson said council tax rates in Worcestershire will continue to be amongst the lowest in the country for county councils.
