Raising funds on the menu for Redditch Scouts

Redditch Editorial 21st May, 2019   0

THERE was a choice of delicious breakfasts on the menu when Redditch Scouts served up a fundraising drive to send six lucky youngsters to the World Scout Jamboree.

Held at the Ecumenical Centre in Evesham Walk, choices ranged from the Full English to a vegetarian or lighter option and all at an attractive price.

Chair of the Birchensale group of Scouts Danny Cockram said Redditch had been lucky enough to have six youngsters selected as part of 36 being sent to represent Worcestershire.

“It’s the culmination of Scouting and the experience of a lifetime,” he said.

“It’s a chance to meet Scouts from around the world – 40,000 from 141 countries – and have the opportunity to build friendships and understanding of different cultures.”

This year’s event is in West Virginia in the United States of America from July 22 and Redditch Scouts are currently £5,000 short of the £25,000 they need to raise to make the trip.

The money will not only pay for the trip but also for preparation camps and help subsidise those Scouts from less well-off countries.

One supporter is Borough and County Councillor Pattie Hill: “I think what they are doing is absolutely fantastic and you can’t complain when you get as good a breakfast as this for £5,” she said.

Also there was Redditch Standard editor Ross Crawford who said: “A great breakfast helping a great cause and prepared and served by some fantastic young people. It’s a pleasure to support them.”

For the Scouts, the fundraising continues with bag packing at another Big Breakfast event on June 8 at the Ecumenical Centre.
