MOUNT Snowdon proved no obstacle for six year-old Ethan Holliday who has raised an incredible four figure sum for Redditch Association for the Blind.
The Abbeywoods First School pupil scaled the highest peak in England and Wales – standing more than a kilometre high – (3,560ft) in less than eight hours for the return trip.
“I knew he could do it but on the day he just breezed it – I was so proud of him,” said Ethan’s dad Dan.
“The two of us had spoken about it for a while and I asked him if he wanted to do something for other people at the same time and he said he wanted to help blind people.
“I looked into it and found Redditch Association for the Blind, they invited us along to one of their afternoons and it went from there.”
Ethan was so confident about what he was doing he told the entire school his plans, said head of school Deena Frost.
And having successfully completed the climb at a special assembly on Monday, July 8 he handed over a bumper cheque for £1,128 to Bill Payne and Mary Birkett from Redditch Association for the Blind.
Addressing the assembly Bill said Redditch had quite a few, mainly elderly people who had lost some or nearly all of their eyesight which often left them isolated and lonely.
“So we run activities for these people so they can go out and enjoy themselves and have some company and I tell you they have a jolly good time,” he said.
“We thank Ethan and his dad and anyone who contributed to this wonderful total.”
Ethan’s fundraising effort pulled in sponsorship not only from within school but from his dad’s employer, Integrated IT Solutions Ltd of Prospect Hill which match funded the first £200 raised.
