West Mercia Police put cash into helping victims of modern slavery

Redditch Editorial 20th Aug, 2019   0

THE Police and Crime Commissioner for West Mercia John Campion has allocated funding to provide victims of modern slavery, human trafficking and forced marriage who are in crisis with immediate support.

The aim is to find victims a safe place and provide them with all the support they need.

The funding, which sits within a central pot, allows West Mercia to provide individuals with immediate access to food, drink and secure accommodation for up to seven nights.

They will then pass over to the National Referral System, a framework for identifying victims and ensuring they receive the appropriate support – typically provided by the Salvation Army.

Victims of forced marriage are referred to other charities.

“I hope the funding I have allocated to be used, when victims need temporary accommodation, will help bring them comfort and support before more permanent living arrangements can be made,” said Mr Campion.
