THE Mayor of Redditch, Councillor Roger Bennett, has been suspended from the Conservative Party.

Coun Bennett (Con, Headless Cross & Oakenshaw) had been expected to formally open the Redditch Rethinks Rubbish Expo at the Town Hall this morning, Saturday, October 19, but dropped out at short notice.

It is understood the conduct in question is in respect of social media posts by Coun Bennett.

He has been suspended from the Conservative Party for six months and is no longer a member of the Conservative Group of the Borough Council.

It is believable he will sit an as independent councillor instead.

A spokesperson for the local party said: “There is still a potential process which is to be finalised and it would be inappropriate to comment further pending that process.”

Members of the local Conservative Party have also been urged not to speak to the Press or to express any views on social media.

Coun Bennett was first elected seven years ago and became Mayor for the year 2019/20.
