REDDITCH Borough council is urging residents to put their rubbish in the correct bin to help reduce recycling lost to contamination.
According to the council every year about ten per cent of the items put in household green bins have to be sent for incineration instead of being turned into new products.
This is because it either contains too many items which are non-recyclable or good recyclable materials have been spoiled by liquids, grease or food waste.
The top five items Redditch residents most often incorrectly put in their green bin include clothing, food waste, nappies, household items and wood.
Councillor Brandon Clayton, whose portfolio covers environmental services, said: “Sadly there is also a small minority of residents who use their green bins as normal waste and therefore spoil it for those residents who do recycle properly.
“I would urge all residents to check the ‘Lets Waste Less’ website for the correct materials to put into green bins.
“But, if in doubt, leave it out.”
