Hundreds locally receiving 'Amazon Prime' scam calls says Action Fraud

Redditch Editorial 14th Feb, 2020   0

ACTION Fraud have received more than 500 reports from people living in West Mercia about scammers impersonating Amazon.

It comes after the Standard confirmed that the online shopping giant will be the tenant for the Redditch Eastern Gateway.

The recipients are told that fraudsters have used their personal details to subscribe to Amazon Prime and are instructed to ‘press 1’ if they’d like to cancel the subscription.

Those who do this are automatically connected to other fraudsters posing as Amazon customer service.

They convince the victims they need to remotely access their computers in order to ‘fix the problem’.

From there, the criminals are able to steal personal and financial details.

A spokesperson for Action Fraud said: “We are reminding people to never install any software as a result of a cold call.

“Unsolicited requests to remote access your computer should always raise a red flag.

“If you’ve received an unexpected phone call, or other communication, stop and take a minute to think about whether an organisation would get in touch with you out of the blue in this way.”

If you have been a victim of fraud or cyber crime visit Action Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040.
