WE’RE coming to the end of St George’s Day, April 23, when normally the streets of Redditch would be festooned with red crosses on a white background.
For us at the Redditch Standard we’d have been rocking all day to the music belting out of the Sportsman Arms just across the road in Peakman Street.
From the Dambusters theme tune to Land of Hope and Glory, a bit of Rule Britannia and the Battle of Britain theme.
Throw in a bit of Colonel Bogie and and the cheering of the good natured regulars and a fine day would have been had by all.
But not this year.
We sent photographer Marcus Mingins out to find a few red crosses and sure enough, The Sportsman didn’t let us down, although the sound system was silent.
Further afield he found the cross of St George fluttering over St Laurence’s Church in Alvechurch.
So here’s to you, St George, and to you too William Shakespeare, we hope you had a good, if unusually peaceful, day.
