Redditch granny praises technology for keeping her connected

A WOMAN in her 90s has praised technology for allowing her to connect with her granddaughter during the coronavirus pandemic.

Redditch resident Sheila has been unable to meet her family members face to face for months.

But the 93-year-old, who receives care from Home Instead Redditch and Bromsgrove, has learned to speak to her loved ones via video calls.

Her care supervisor, Abbie Sutherland, set Sheila up with Facebook Portal which allows people to communicate virtually.

Sheila’s ‘magic box’, as she calls it, allows her to regularly speak with her granddaughter, Emma, who lives in Belgium.

“It’s lovely because I can stay in my bed and talk to Emma through this magic box,” she said.

“I think Christmas has come very early for me. Thank you to everybody, especially Abbie, who has been so helpful.”

Sheila is not alone in utilising new technology.

A recent Home Instead survey found that 75 per cent of older people have used technology to contact their family during the pandemic.
