Redditch mum Sharon Harvey runs up big total for the Royal British Legion

BIG HEARTED Redditch mum Sharon Harvey has raised a bumper £262 – and counting – after doing her own ‘Poppy Run’ in aid of the Royal British Legion.

Sharon, a learning cover supervisor at Trinity High, pulled on her running shoes after plans to sell poppies on behalf of the local branch of the RBL were scuppered by Covid-19.

Undaunted, she set about covering 42 kilometres – the distance of a marathon – crowning it with a 16km run taking in all Redditch’s war memorials on Remembrance Sunday itself, November 8.

“I enjoy running but am not fit enough or fast enough to do 42km in one go so I thought I’d do a bit at a time for the Royal British Legion,” said Sharon, whose family had close ties with the RBL when she was growing up.

“The Royal British Legion played quite a large part in my life and we have always supported it,” she said.

“Normally it would get a lot of money at this time of year but not this year. I wanted to do something to help and so I thought, why not go out and do a run.”

Setting herself a target of £50 she set out from Astwood Bank War Memorial, to Crabbs Cross St Peter’s Memorial, then Headless Cross St Luke’s Memorial, to St Philip’s at Webheath, down Plymouth Road to the Peace Garden, St Stephen’s in town centre, Mount Carmel, before ending at Bomford Hill Peace Memorial and finally up the hill to St Leonard’s War Memorial in Beoley.

“The Royal British Legion is such an important organisation and I’d like to thank everyone who helped me and donated to my account.

Every penny raised will go to the Royal British Legion,” she said.
