Let there be lights: Christmas switch on proves success in Headless Cross

Redditch Editorial 11th Dec, 2020   0

THE Mayor of Redditch Councillor Gareth Prosser was on hand to officially switch the Christmas lights on in Headless Cross Green on Friday evening, December 4.

He was joined by his Borough Councillors Roger Bennett and Jo Beecham, who both represent the area at the Town Hall.

Also at the event were Rachel Evans and Becky Rose organisers, since 2014, of the traditional Christmas Eve carol service in aid of The Primrose Hospice.

“It was great to once again see the Christmas lights shining over Headless Cross Orchard,” said the Mayor.

“Last year the carol concert was attended by more than 500 residents and raised over a thousand pounds for our local hospice.

“So it is disappointing that this year’s event has had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.

“However Rachel and Becky are inviting residents to maintain the tradition by singing carols on their doorsteps at 6 o’clock on Christmas Eve.”

The event has been backed by Coun Bennett for the last three years who has provided financial support to cover the cost of supplying the lights, their installation and storage.

He said: “In a year like no other it is more important than ever that the spirit of Christmas shines out, and it has been my pleasure to help support this grand occasion.”
