More noise needed for Redditch Wassail in the new year

PEOPLE are being urged to make some noise in the new year to wake the fruit trees in Redditch.

It comes after the traditional Wassail at Headless Cross Orchard was cancelled for 2021 due to the ongoing Covid restrictions.

Instead Alistair Waugh from the orchard would appreciate it if people raised a glass, made some noise and toasted the trees from the comfort of their own home.

“I’m afraid it’s another victim of the pandemic but we still need people to play their part if we are to have a fruitful and bountiful new year,” he said.

The Headless Cross Wassail has become one of the ‘must’ events in Redditch over the year, seeing the fruit trees toasted and a veritable cacophony of noise made to wake them up after their winter slumber.

The Wassail tradition dates back to Anglo Saxon and Norse times and is traditionally held on Twelfth Night, January 5 or 6.
