He touched the nation: Flowers left at family's mural to a hero

FLOWERS are being left at the foot of an artistic tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore in Studley.

Captain Sir Tom, who died on Tuesday, February 2 aged 100, after contracting coronavirus, captured the heart of the nation as he carried out his vow to do 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday to raise £1,000 for the NHS.

In the end he raised close to £39million with donations coming in from 169 countries.

In tribute to his fundraising exploits over the summer, a portrait of Captain Sir Tom was drawn by Redditch couple Daryl and Claire Lancaster on the garage door of their Watts Road home.

“There was a knock on the door at about 5pm on Tuesday night and it was someone asking if he could leave some flowers in memory of Captain Tom,” said Claire.

“It just touched me.

“Since then we’ve had lots of calls from people asking if they could leave a tribute too.”

The news even spread to Heart FM’s Ed James, who lives in the village.

“He had seen a not of it on Facebook and said he just had to mention it on Heart,” said Claire.

Captain Sir Tom Moore was painted by popular demand.

Claire Lancaster had wanted to paint some dinosaurs for the couple’s three-year-old son Fin on their garden walls.

But then her husband Daryl got in on the act and the Blues Brothers appeared, and a Lancaster bomber and countless other images.

A post on Facebook led to a clamour for Captain Sir Tom Moore and with no room left on their walls, the couple painted the marvellous multi-million pound raising centenarian on their garage door.
