Well discovery in craft centre sparks call for history of Winyates

AN appeal for information on the history of Winyates and the surrounding area has been made by Shelley Millward of Magicakes.

It comes when she discovered a well in the middle of Winyates Craft Centre.

Now she’s hoping it can be made into a feature at the centre.

“Pattie Hill, the former councillor who died last year, was a great friend to us and I thought about making a garden in the centre in her memory,” said Shelley.

“I’d got a willow tree to plant and we only just put the spade in the ground when it opened up into a sink hole.

“At first we thought it was a cracked sewer, so we called the council and they said it was a well, and put this ugly drain cover over the top.

“But the water is lovely and clear and it would be nice to put a proper grill over it and build it up so it looks like a proper well.

“It goes down 16ft and the water is lovely and clear.”

What is known is that there was a farm and what is now Winyates Centre but beyond that Shelley is appealing for more information.

Shelley can be contact at Magicakes via Facebook or email: [email protected] and we’ll pass the details on.
