See Redditch as you've never seen it before at Heritage Open Day

Redditch Editorial 1st Sep, 2021   0

IF YOU’VE got a head for heights then spectacular views of Redditch are available through a Tower Tour of St Stephen’s Church in Church Green.

It’s all part of the UK-wide Heritage Open Day next Saturday, September 11.

Not only that but visitors will also be able to explore the beautiful church, ask questions and find out about upcoming Alpha courses.

Also on show will be 13th Century tiles from Bordesley Abbey and the church’s fine stained glass windows, as well as historic photographs of the choir from the archives.

And, being the church at the beating heart of Redditch, there will also be the opportunity to sit and reflect and pray should you wish to.

A video will also be running showing the recently completed roof and masonry repair project and if that’s not enough, Redditch Local History Museum will also have a display in church.

It all represents a rare opportunity to book a tour of the tallest tower in Redditch, and, as well as rewarding views, visitors can see the ring of eight bells,, six fitted in 1857 by the Warner Company with the other two fitted in 1896 by John Taylor of Loughborough.

The third bell invites ‘Good people all, when we call, come to pray, stay not away’.

The tower also houses the clock mechanism, which needs to be set roughly once a week and dates back to 1809.

The church’s ‘Tower Captain’ and team will be giving bellringing demonstrations and there will then be the opportunity to make the bells sound for yourself by having a go at chiming.

The tours are limited to six people per tour and these will take place at 11am, midday, 2pm and 3pm,

To book a place contact Elaine Whitfield or Gail Stone on 07836 644445 Email: office@[email protected].

Bookings close on September 3, 2021.

There will also be a craft activity or two for children and a chance to see the children’s garden tended by the church’s Young Bellringers Group.
