Redditch council goes green in drive to boost recycling figures

BUILDINGS in Redditch and across the county are being lit up in green for National Recycle Week, to remind residents to step up their recycling habits and recycle the right things.

Now in its 18th year, Recycle Week is the one week of the year where retailers, brands, waste management companies, trade associations, governments and the media come together to achieve one goal: to inspire the public into recycling more of the right things, more often.

Redditch Borough Council is joining in with the campaign by lighting up its buildings, alongside partners at Rubicon Leisure.

This year Recycle Week runs until September 26 and the theme is ‘step it up’, which aims to encourage residents to make small but powerful changes to their day to day lives – such as recycling – to have an impact on climate change.

Councillor Anthony Lovell, the borough’s portfolio holder for climate change, said: “The climate crisis is a challenge but as a nation we have proved throughout the course of the pandemic that we are capable of working together to action change and rise to such challenges.

“For me, climate change is no different and small changes like improving recycling can make a huge impact if we do them together.”

Leader of Redditch Borough Council, Coun Matt Dormer, added: “Recycling a single plastic bleach bottle can save enough energy to power a streetlight for six and a half hours.

“That means if all 70,000 adults in the borough made a conscious effort to recycle one additional plastic bottle this Recycle Week, the energy we saved could power a streetlight for 455,000 hours.

“That’s 52 years! Small changes really can make a big difference, so step it up and improve your recycling habits this week.”
