'More women needed at decision time for COP26' says WI ladies

MEMBERS of Studley Priory WI have pledged to do what they can to combat climate change as concerns about the heating planet grow.

The action by the 25 women comes as Glasgow prepares for the vital COP26 talks involving world leaders.

Priory’s president, Sue Johnson using resources from the Warwickshire Federation of WIs highlighted the disadvantages faced by women across the world in dealing with climate issues first hand, for example in food and home production as well as carrying water.

She also pointed out that women have very little voice at the decision making table.

Members also created their own tree of promises which they hope will be added to other similar trees across the country to form a ‘forest of promises’ that will be presented to world leaders at COP26 .

The ladies promised to:

Reduce plastic waste and recycle more soft plastic, reuse more products, stop using plastic bags, use sandwich boxes instead of clingfilm, use soap instead of shower gel in plastic bottles, to drive less and walk more, eat less meat and cut down on food waste, to buy local and use refill service to cut plastic use and food miles, recycle more items that we didn’t know before we could recycle, to plant trees and compost more.

The ladies asked world leaders to:

Set up steps to prevent food waste, think and act more, to tell the truth and keep their promises! Encourage all countries to reduce use of fossil fuels, put freight on trains to reduce HGV diesel use, set up infrastructures to increase realistic renewable energy options, find alternatives to plastic containers, and also for more women to be involved in the decision-making processes.

A spokeswoman said: “We learned such a lot and we all went away with our own promises to do our little bit.

“Every little thing counts, just as many leaves make up a whole tree and trees together make up a forest.

“We think COP should stand for ‘Change our Planet’. #PromiseToThePlanet WWF UK”
