PAUL Brookes a well known local man often seen about in Redditch with a guide dog, his last called Nevis, but more recently with his long cane, has passed away. He was 68.
A day would never go by without Paul having people coming up to him and chatting.
He would visit Caffé Nero several time a week and they were always pleasant and helpful to him.
Staff would take him to a seat and look after him.
The Beefeater was another venue he liked and there too staff were always kind and courteous.
He had no sight since birth.
He went everywhere on foot or by taxi or train.
He was a man who enjoyed life and especially Redditch.
The Ecumenical Centre was another port of call and he would sit and chat there or attend services.
He loved singing and sang in several choirs.
His own qualities were thoughtfulness and generosity and although he was born in Edinburgh, he loved Redditch, a town where he felt at home.
He worked far many years as a telephonist for Barclays Bank and was a trustee for Redditch Association for the Blind charity and attended their luncheon club and outings.
His advice and support for the many members was appreciated.
He was a ‘good bloke’ as we would say, a ‘top man’ and he will be greatly missed.
