Redditch councillors vote against allowance increase

COUNCILLORS voted against accepting the independent renumeration panels recommendation to award councillors a severn per cent increase in allowances.

At a Conservative Executive Committee last week, councillors refused the to rise, stating it was wrong to do amid the cost of living crisis.

Leader of Redditch Borough Council, Coun Matt Dormer, said: “With the rises in costs hitting our residents it didn’t feel right contributing further to this with an added cost to the taxpayer.

“Although I’d like to add that our councillors work very hard representing their wards and I appreciate all the effort they put in.”

Coun Emma Marshall, borough councillor for Arrow Valley West, added: “As much as I’d appreciate an uplift in allowances, I appreciate our residents are already feeling the pinch and asking for them to pay us more doesn’t seem right.”
