Alex nurse practitioner trekking to Everest Base Camp to fundraise for life-saving charity work

A REDDITCH nurse is taking on the ultimate challenge of trekking to the Everest Base Camp to raise funds for a search and rescue charity.

Pauline Burton works as an emergency nurse practitioner at the Alexandra Hospital A&E, and is also an operational crew member of SARA Wyre Forest team.

SARA is a volunteer lifeboat, inland search and rescue charity, with lifeboat and rescue stations along the length of the River Severn.

The charity is entirely made up of volunteer members, and needs funds to continue its work.

The epic trek in March will cover around 130km including nearly 9,000 feet of elevation gain.

Pauline, 54, has been training for the challenge for almost a year in order to be fit and ready for the physical exertions of mountain walking in the Himalayas.

As part of her programme she has taken part in VO2 max testing to check the amount of oxygen she uses during exercise.

Pauline said: “Average temperature at Everest Base Camp in March in 2022 was +6C to -25C.

“Snow and thunderstorms are likely, but it will also have brilliantly sunny days and good visibility so I’m hoping to bring back great photos and amazing memories.

“As part of SARA, I provide inshore lifeboat, cliff rescue, mud rescue, swift water, flood rescue and land search.

“SARA is an associate member team of Mountain Rescue England and Wales.

“I myself am an operational crew member of SARA Wyre Forest team, based at Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Hub and it would mean so much to me to raise as much money as I can.”
