Redditch Labour leader and deputy raise over £300 for Stroke Association

REDDITCH Labour group leader and stroke survivor Coun Joe Baker has laced up his running shoes to raise cash for the Stroke Association.

Coun Baker was joined by deputy leader Coun Sharon Harvey and both used the Couch to 5k programme to train for their run.

Coun Baker said: “When Sharon told me about the couch to 5k I did not hesitate to put myself forward to join her.

“Even though I don’t run and have poor fitness levels I thought I would give it a go. It was a tough gig but Sharon kept encouraging me to continue, to show how we can both lead by example.”

It was only six weeks into training they decided to raise money for a cause close to Joe’s heart.

He added: “After chatting to Sharon it was decided we would do it in aid of the Stroke Association.

“Six years ago I had a stroke which left me with a weak left hand side and brain injury. As a stroke survivor I have always pushed myself to never let it dictate my life.

“Last year I passed my motorbike test and now I was determined to do a 5k run.”

Last weekend they put their training to the test at parkrun at Arrow Valley Park and crossed the finishing line in just under 43 minutes.

Coun Harvey said: “I was already a runner and I am always keen to encourage others to give it a try.

“Joe has shown determination and put in a lot of hard work to achieve this.”

The pair have now raised more than £300 for the Stroke Association.
