Motoring: Brilliant hybrid Honda CR-V is one of the best SUVs on the market

Honda CR-V 2.0 i-MMD Hybrid EX – AWD CVT

Motoring review by Tony Yates

Power and Efficiency:

The new CR-V I have on test is a modern-day Hybrid, so that means you get a 2.0 Litre petrol engine that has 145PS and 175 Nm of torque.

Then you add in the CR-Vs Hybrid system, which then gets you 315Nm of torque and 184PS thanks to that electric motor – which in turn makes it into a totally different machine altogether.

Top speed – 112mph along with a 0-62 sprint of 9.2s. Now, I would not call it ‘sporty’ – but it does get a move on thanks to the additional push from that electric motor.

The CR-V was also fitted with an eCVT gearbox – which I’m going to say I am not a fan of, but saying that, it’s functional and it gets the job done – so I’m not going to complain too much.

On the road:

A good ride height is a big plus point for the CR-V – along with how it feels out on the open road.

The chassis and suspension are also set up very nicely indeed for all sorts of surfaces and it felt well planted to the road ahead.

If you do have to go off-road – then don’t expect the CR-V to come to a sudden stop as soon as you hit the grass either.

That’s because Honda has managed to do a very good job of getting the (AWD) system to function as a proper 4X4 – which makes it more than capable of doing more than its fair share of off-road work when it comes to going out on the sloppy stuff.

Also, I may have told you this before – but when I get a car to test, I always take a pre-set route that can take me up to 100miles away from my starting point which for me is a good test of how tired or relaxed I feel after a long drive.

Well, I have to say – because the driving position and the Petrol/Hybrid systems were so refined – I arrived back home as fresh as daisy.

Safety and Technology:

The interior is of a good standard and its controls are well set out and all the dials are clear.

The space inside is good – better than most large SUVs I care to mention.

You would easily fit in a very large family along with a couple of Dogs if the need was there. Plus – everything inside the CR-V feels well put together.

There is also no corner-cutting when it comes to quality either – Honda has gone the extra mile to make it feel very upmarket inside.

Boot space inside is also good with a rear seat up capacity of (497 litres) and rear seats folded flat capacity of (1064 litres)

Standard equipment in the EX model range is good and includes; ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) Airbags – Front Driver & Passenger, Airbags – Side Curtain (Front and Rear) Blind Spot Information incl.

Cross Traffic Monitor, Agile Handle Assist (AHA) ECON Mode, Electric Parking Brake, Brake Hold, Head-Up Display, Hill Start Assist (HSA) Dual Zone Climate and Air Conditioning – including Rear Vents, Rear View Camera, Bluetooth TM Hands-Free Telephone (HFT) DAB, Honda CONNECT with GARMIN Navigation (7” touchscreen, AM/FM/DAB, internet radio, Aha TM app integration, Apple Carplay and Android Auto) 9 Speaker audio and Wireless Charging.

To sum up:

A brilliant machine from Honda – If you are looking around for one of the best petrol/Hybrid large SUVs currently on the market – then you need to look no further than the latest version of the Honda CR-V.
