£4million street light replacement scheme sees 16,500 LED lanterns across Worcestershire

A MAJOR £4million county street light replacement project has come to an end with 16,500 LED lanterns now installed across Worcestershire.

The quality of the white lighting produced by the LED luminaires provides a more controlled standard of illumination and minimal light pollution.

In addition, the conversions to LED lights will result in a significant and welcome reduction in the County’s energy consumption.

As part of the project, Worcestershire County Council has also replaced 750 concrete columns.

Coun Alan Amos, cabinet member for Highways, said: “It’s great we can now shine a light on the fantastic work our street lighting team and our contractors have done, to improve street lighting across Worcestershire.

“The programme has been completed despite the challenges the Covid 19 pandemic has brought to our planned highway improvements and that is something we can be particularly proud of.”

As part of the roll out, additional health and safety measures were put into place in light of Covid-19 restrictions and have continued.

The council has been able to carry out the majority of its day to day functions such as fault repairs, the roll out of LED lanterns and emergency attendance to accident damaged assets.

Lighting improvements have been already been made across a number of schemes including Southern Link Road Phase 4, Churchfields, Broomhall Way footbridge, Pump Street, and Pinvin Crossroads with more to follow as other schemes progress.

In addition, lighting improvements have also been made at a number of locations where new zebra installations are being introduced across the county.
