LAST Saturday’s Feckenham Wake was the busiest ever with an estimated 2,500 people flocking to the Worcestershire village for family fun and merriment.

Attractions centred around the green and recreation ground this year included a fun dog show, classic car rally – attended by more than 130 vehicles, Punch and Judy, crazy golf, climbing wall, crafts stalls and not forgetting giant jumping kangaroos.

Musical entertainment was provided by Arrow Valley Brass Band and refreshments, including a pig roast, real ale bar and cream teas, were served up to the masses.

Three sides of Morris dancers including Shakespeare Morris from Stratford also filled the streets with colour and the sound of bells.

Chair of the organising committee Julian Bull, said: “I’ve been involved for 14 years and people have said this was the best and busiest we have ever had. The sunshine certainly made a difference.”

Julian told the Standard the purpose of the day was to ‘create a top class and enjoyable event that embodies traditional values’ and the kind of fun to be had ‘was a million miles from looking at your phone’.

He extended a huge thanks to all the volunteers that made it happen.

The fair dates back to 1237 and King Henry III who enjoyed hunting in Feckenham Forest.

In gratitude, he ordered a market and fair to be held once a year on the ‘eve and day of the nativity of St John the Baptist’ which is annually marked on June 24.
