Rallying call to join Alcester Silver Band

Redditch Editorial 14th Jun, 2024   0

THE ALCESTER Victoria Silver Band is looking for people to blow their own trumpets – along with other instruments.

The band, formed in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, is starting a training band and is calling on people to join the ranks.

The musical ensemble which plays at fetes and events throughout Warwickshire and Worcestershire has a number of instruments to loan out and newcomers will be taught by current band members.

Band secretary Miriam Hall, said: “We’re keen to get some new players learning – whether it’s children wanting to start or adults who may not have played in years but would like to pick up their instrument again.”

Those wishing to see the band in action can catch it tomorrow evening (Saturday, June 15) at the Greig Hall, Alcester when it will join the Tarantara Choir for a special concert to support people living with dementia.

A Right Royal Prom will bring the band and choir together for a mix of popular music, classical, show tunes and the proms classics to raise cash for Alcester Dementia Cafe.

Organisers said it would be a chance to join in with some traditional favourites such as Land of Hope and Glory, and Jerusalem.

The audience is encouraged to dress in red, white and blue and a special guest soloist has been booked to perform Rule Britannia.

The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £12 from tarantara.org.uk or from Guys Menswear on High Street, Alcester.

The band rehearses on Monday evenings at the Alcester Guide and Scout Centre, Moorfield Road and the training band is hoping to start in September.

Anyone interested should get in contact with Miriam via avsband.co.uk or the Alcester Victoria Silver Band Facebook.
