A REDDITCH BMX racer has qualified to represent Great Britain in the UCI World BMX Championships taking place in South Carolina.

Preston Newmarsh-Pow, is a nine-year-old regional and national BMX racer.

His love and passion for racing started at only two years of age when he began Strider racing on his balance bike at Birmingham BMX track and won his first trophy.

His love for racing then grew and grew – at three years of age he transitioned straight to pedals and by the age of four was tackling Redditch BMX track with his parents chasing him on foot ensuring his safety and pushing him up the big jumps he was unable to accomplish himself.

Due to his national ranking of tenth, Preston qualified for the UCI World BMX Championships in South Carolina, USA.

He has registered for the event and is extremely proud and excited to be representing GB between May 12 and 18.

His mum, Lisa Newmarsh said: “Preston is a huge advocate of the benefits of BMX and already, at such a young age, has a strong sporting acumen.

“He has also recently collaborated with Studley Bicycle Repair Centre which supports his racing from both a maintenance and skill transfer perspective, keeping his bike safe and mechanically sound whilst, the owner Des, also teaches Preston how to maintain his bike.”

He has overcome countless crashes, resulting in many injuries, which his mum said has made him stronger and even more focused and determined.

“Preston displayed fantastic and extraordinary sportsmanship, by encouraging, supporting and cheering on his fellow racers and being a key and inspirational role model.

“He has worked so hard to to train and prepare for this opportunity, receiving coaching from multiple top BMX coaches around the country and is immensely proud to represent GB in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
