Redditch school children waddles along to song to help save marine life

A REDDITCH primary school, is taking part in a national challenge raising awareness and money to protect endangered marine life.

Ahead of World Seabird Day, July 3, Out of the Ark Music, a schools’ music publisher has partnered with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to make the song available for free, allowing everyone to join in the celebration.

The catchy song, ‘Penguins!’, is sweeping across schools and homes throughout the UK, with pupils from Astwood Bank Primary joining in.

The song serves as both a fun and educational resource, teaching listeners about all 18 penguin species.

From garden benches to school assembly halls, the UK has enthusiastically embraced the #DoTheWaddle challenge, which involves performing the song while waddling like penguins.

Videos of these performances have garnered tens of thousands of views across social media platforms.

Naomi Johnson, co-writer of the song, said: “We wrote Penguins! initially, because we knew that children would simply love singing about them.

“Songs are powerful, and this funky, infectious tune was written to waddle its way into schools and bring some joy and smile factor, whilst also encouraging schools to expand their learning on penguins and the pressing need for seabird preservation.

“It’s been a real treat to see children, parents and teachers alike get involved up and down the country.”

To celebrate World Seabird Day, primary schools nationwide are participating in Penguins Week from July 1 to July 5.

During this week, schools can download a free Penguins pack that includes an assembly plan, a Words on a Screen™ version of the song, and activities designed to engage children in singing and learning.

This pack, created by Out of the Ark Music and WWF, also educates children on the environmental challenges facing penguins and their habitats.
