Sew good: Health Trust steps up call for double ply face masks

Redditch Editorial 7th Jul, 2020   0

AN appeal for more people to join a cottage industry which has made 250 face masks has been made by the local health trust.

The call, from Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust comes as all members of the public visiting Worcestershire Royal, the Alexandra Hospital and Kidderminster Hospital are now required to wear a face-covering upon entering the hospital environment.

A spokesperson said: “We are now accepting donations of double-ply fabric masks which we can offer as an alternative to disposable masks provided by the hospitals.

“We are keen to stress that donated masks will not replace the use of any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for our staff, who follow our own clear policies on masks.”

According to scientific studies double-ply face masks can slow the spread of Covid-19 transmission and help asymptomatic individuals prevent transmitting it to others.

The Trust hopes that by building a healthy supply of fabric masks they can be provided to people who do not have their own face coverings and/or would not like to wear a paper mask provided.

It re-purposes unwanted clothing and other fabric items that may otherwise end up in landfill.

The reusable nature means that it can be taken home and washed and reused in the community where necessary.

Each donated face-covering will be gifted to one individual. They will not be transferable or shareable.
