A REDDITCH teacher is in the final of the ‘Outstanding New Teacher’ category in a national competition.

Joe Feivan, from Tudor Grange Academy, is in the running for the accolade at this year’s Pearson National Teaching Awards.

Joe was selected from thousands of nominees, acknowledging the amazing impact he has had on shaping the lives of the young people.

Joe began his career at Tudor Grange Academy Redditch as a Teach First trainee and has flourished ever since.

He is part of the innovative mathematics department at the academy which culturally delivers way beyond its remit.

‘A privilege to have him on my team’

Lead teacher of maths, William Davies, said: “Mathematics is the backbone to so many subjects in school and features in so many areas of life.

“It is the language of science, its calculations allow us to quantify, understand, explain, and predict the world around us.

“The understanding of mathematics is so important, and it is imperative that our students receive the best mathematics teaching from as early as possible.

“Joe understands this and his contribution and constant presence have been a privilege for the department, the school and the students.

“Despite being at such an early stage in his career, Joe’s lessons are planned and delivered to a standard well beyond his years.

“He has also played an integral role in providing support to staff (including non-specialists), designing assessments (not usually the job of an ECT), and supporting writing schemes of work or other key areas of development.

“Joe is a very worthy winner of this award and we are all very proud of him.”

‘Delighted with his enthusiasm’

Tudor Grange Academy principal, Marie McNamara, said: “I was recently contacted to say that Joe was a winner of this award and have had to stay quiet.

“However, it was wonderful to surprise him in front of his peers.

“I am so delighted Joe’s enthusiasm for maths has been recognised and celebrated on a national platform.”

She also thanked Mr Davies and his team for providing the support and encouragement which enabled the academy’s teachers to exceed their potential.

“Joe is a credit to them. He is passionate about teaching maths and has formed strong relationships with both staff and students alike.

“His impact on our students has been huge and this award is very well-deserved.”

Claire Maclean, CEO of Tudor Grange Academies Trust, said: “It’s wonderful to celebrate all the incredibly talented and passionate teachers entering secondary education, particularly in the STEM subjects.

“Joe is an exemplar in his field, and I am delighted the Tudor Grange Academy Redditch academy is celebrating his award together.”
