THE Redditch landscape will see a temporary addition as a mobile drilling rig is put in place to carry out essential soil sampling works.
The grounds at Ipsley Church Lane will undergo environmental testing to assess the site’s suitability as a possible future cemetery site.
The testing will be conducted via a mobile drilling rig by Geo-Environmental, and will last two days, starting on Thursday, October 20.
“There are no concrete plans to build a cemetery at this site but this an issue nationally, as land for burials is in short-supply,” said Redditch borough councillor Debbie Taylor, whose portfolio covers Environmental Services.
“By carrying out these works we will know if this area is suitable or not for future development of this nature.
“We also think the drilling will be of interest to our communities – not only is it an impressive site, but there is an opportunity for geological enthusiasts to get involved.”
As part of the project the Council and contractors will be involving students and interested community groups in assessing the soil samples and what they reveal. Pupils from Academy Arrow Vale will be on site when the drill first arrives and will help with assessments as part of their studies.
Ward member Coun Juliet Brunner said: “It is not often we drill 8m into the ground or have a drill in situ and we are taking the opportunity to share this experience with our communities.”
