Bank women get off to a flying start

CLARE BOYCOTT’S half-century and four wickets from Emily Blakemore helped secure victory for Astwood Bank women in their first game of the Women’s Midlands League Division Two season.

On a day when a cold wind swept across the Bank’s home ground, Bank captain Amber Capewell won the toss and put visitors Moddershall into bat.

An early run out in the first over created some initial pressure but and a stand of 31 between Jemma Conner and Monique Draycott started to look promising for the visitors until Maddy Adams broke the partnership at 34.

This was quickly followed by the first of two wickets for Amelia Kite as she clean bowled Conner to leave Moddershall on 36-3.

Three further wickets fell in quick succession to Blakemore who finished a great bowling display with 4-17.

At 57-6 on a slow wicket, it was always going to be difficult for the visitors, especially as Bank produced a great fielding performance spearheaded by Grace Robinson and Emily Saunders.

The visitors consolidated slightly before the seventh wicket fell to Jess Humby and they finished on 102-9 from their 40 overs.

Bank started their innings with a great opening partnership of 65 between Boycott and Charlie Evans (22) before Boycott was out on 56 with only six runs required to win.

The incoming Kite finished the innings by hitting the ball out of the ground to secure a seven-wicket success and the Bank ladies’ first win of the season.

Astwood Bank CC has the largest women and girls’ section in Worcestershire, with teams covering all ages from under 11 to ladies’ 1st and 2nd XI.

The ladies train at ABCC on Wednesday evenings (Friday evenings for juniors) and more details are available from Tim Haslam by calling 07976 723095 or e-mailing [email protected].

ASTWOOD Bank 4ths emerged six-run victors over hosts Barnards Green in Worcestershire League Division Four 2nd XI.

Green won the toss and elected to bowl and Bank made a cautious start as wickets fell regularly.

At 63-4 Kieran Neilson-Watts came to the crease and he produced what turned out to be a match-winning contribution.

Although wickets continued to fall, Astwood Bank made a creditable 162-8 off their 45 overs as Neilson-Watts finished unbeaten on 53.

In reply Barnards Green’s openers made easy work of the conditions as they reached 84 without loss after 20 overs and the result looked in no doubt until the first wicket went down.

However, a flurry of wickets left Green needing seven runs off the last over with batsmen ten and 11 at the crease and quick work behind the stumps by Bank wicketkeeper Jake Browning finished the job for the visitors as Green were dismissed for 156.

BANK’S first team begin their Birmingham League Division Three campaign at home to Fordhouses on Saturday.
