Appeal for more firefighters

Redditch Editorial 8th May, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

AN APPEAL has gone out for on-call firefighters for Redditch.

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service wants extra personnel to provide cover during the day at the station in Birmingham Road.

An awareness session for those interested will be held at Bromsgrove Fire Station at 6.30pm this Wednesday, May 13. Anyone interested should call HWFRS’ HR department on 01905 368343.

On-call firefighters must live or work within five minutes travel time of the fire station and must be over 18.

Trainee on-call firefighters receive an annual retainer of between £1,635 to £2,180 depending on the level of cover they provide, along with extra pay for attending emergency call outs.

Ashley Mooney has been an on-call firefighter at Redditch Fire Station for the last two years.

He said: “’I enjoy working as part of a team – it is great for your self confidence.”

Station Commander Phil Berry said the service would welcome both men and women: “The role is a challenging yet extremely rewarding one, and provides a vital service within the local community.

“It’s also a chance to learn a range of new skills, such as accident prevention and first aid, that can be of real benefit in other areas of your life.”

When fully trained, the firefighters can earn up to £8,000-a-year, depending on the level of cover provided and the number of call-outs. Visit www.hwfire.org.uk for more details about the role of on-call firefighters.
