Holocaust candle to tour borough

A SPECIAL candle which marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp will be used to teach young people about the holocaust.

Bill Harnett, leader of Redditch Borough Council, and Mayor Pat Witherspoon, have agreed to allow schools within the borough to have the memorial candle to help educate children and keep the memory of the victims of genocide alive.

Redditch was one of 70 to be picked to receive the candle which has been commissioned by The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and designed by Sir Anish Kapoor.

It was lit by death camp survivor Iby Knill as part of the town’s commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day last month.

As part of its journey across Redditch it has also gone on show to staff and customers at TSB bank on Unicorn Hill and will soon go to St Thomas More Catholic First School and St Augustine’s Catholic High School.

Schools should email Lizomon Mapranath at [email protected] if they would like to host the candle for a few days.
