Judge jails ‘arrogant young man’

A MAN who produced a licence in another name when caught drink-driving and then carried on getting behind the wheel has been jailed for 16 months.

Aaron Sait, of Allendale Court in Studley, was branded an ‘arrogant young man’ by the judge at Warwick Crown Court and swaggered from the dock, smirking, as he was led to the cells after also being handed a three year driving ban.

The 21-year-old had pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to driving while disqualified, perverting the course of justice and having no insurance. He initially failed to turn up for his sentencing and was arrested after a warrant was issued by the court.

Sait had been disqualified from driving after being caught over the legal alcohol limit but had produced a licence in the name of Aaron Martin which was his father’s surname.

However he continued to drive using the licence he had applied for in his own name. His deception only came to light when Sait was arrested for an unrelated matter of theft from his girlfriend’s bank account, for which he was given a community order in February.

Nick Devine, defending, said: “He has admitted he knew what he was doing and took a calculated decision to drive the vehicle knowing he was disqualified.”

He added Sait had failed to turn up when the case was first listed because he was living at an address in Derby as a condition of bail, and did not have the money to get to court, but later handed himself in to police.

Sait was jailed for 12 months for perverting the course of justice, with consecutive sentences of three months for driving while disqualified and one month for failing to surrender to his bail.

Recorder Tim Raggatt QC told Sait he had shown an ‘entire disregard’ for the fact he had been disqualified.

“You simply go on offending, and offending in the same way.” he said.

“I note your demeanour; it is arrogant and shows a disregard for the whole proceedings. You are perfectly entitled to show that arrogant disregard – and the court is entitled to deal with you as an arrogant young man who needs teaching a lesson.”
