THE Kerala Cultural Association of Redditch held its annual Onam harvest festival recently with close to 150 people attending plus guests including borough Mayor Councillor Joe Baker and council leader Councillor Bill Hartnett.

The festival is in honour of the the annual arrival of the legendary King Mahabali from the underworld and he duly made his visit to Redditch as the KCA celebrated his day at Woodfield Academy.

The event featured a packed cultural programme, including a tug of war event, as well as the distribution of medals and commendations for achievers throughout the year, including success at GCSE and on the sports field.

Another feature of the day is its famous vegetarian lunch comprising of around 20 dishes served on a banana leaf.

Everyone came in their traditional dress which is setsaree for girls and mundushirt for boys.

The day long event started at 10.30am with lamp lighting and Onam wishes to the members by the President of the association, and closed at 8pm.

A spokesman said: “KCA Redditch would like to wish all the Redditch Standard readers Happy Onam and hope the future brings more unity and diversity by loving and respecting each other.”
