Postcard from the frontline’s local links

THE SEARCH is on for relatives of an Astwood Bank family after a silk postcard sent from the First World War trenches was uncovered nearly 100 years later.

The intricate message was sent to a ‘Mrs AW Shepherd, Evesham Road, Astwood Bank’ with the message ‘from your loving husband Archie’. The postmark on the card is July 15, 1918.

Now a woman in Lancashire is trying to find relatives of the couple so that she can reunite them with the unusual piece of family history.

Lesley Gray, who lives in Skelmersdale, said she came across the card when sorting through some things.

“I’m not sure where I would have got the postcard but it would have been in the North West somewhere.” she said.

“I’m a bit of a hoarder and have probably had it for a couple of years.

“It would be interesting to find out if Mr and Mrs Shepherd still have family in the area.

“If they do then I’ll let them have the postcard.”

Anyone who knows anything about the Shepherd’s of Astwood Bank should call the newsdesk on 01527 588657.
