BRAVE Sara Treacy, the Alexandra Hospital A&E doctor who went out to the Olympics in Rio to take part in the Steeplechase, finished a creditable 17th in a race run in searing heat.

Sara, a junior doctor who’d taken a sabbatical break to train for the event, was representing her home country of the Republic of Ireland.

In round one she finished the 3,000 metre event with a time of 9 minutes 46 seconds, qualifying her for the final where she came in with 9 minutes 52 seconds behind the eventual gold medallist Ruth Jebet of Bahrain, with Kenya’s Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi claiming silver and the US’s Emma Coburn getting the bronze.

However, while the full time athletes have a rest before preparing for their next bout of training and competition, it’s back to the Alex for Sara.
