A POLICE chief is appealing for residents to express their views on the introduction of 20mph speed limits in certain areas of Redditch.
Bill Longmore, Police and Crime Commissioner for the West Mercia Police made his force-wide call after being approached by some residents for his views on the matter. As a result he would like hear from more people.
“I think this enforcement issue is a really important one,” he said. “It impacts so heavily on police resources during these times when budgets are being constantly reduced.”
Supporters of the speed restrictions believe they reduce death and injury whilst protecting children and the elderly.
Other benefits are understood to include a reduced demand on Accident and Emergency units along with a health bonus of encouraging more walking and cycling, which in turn reduces obesity.
Yet others claim the limits are too difficult to enforce and put extra, unnecessary demands on the police.
Earlier this year Worcestershire County Council, the local highwways authority, rejected pleas for 20mph zones to be introduced in certain areas.
