Traffic fears over moving post office

PLANS to move Inkberrow Post Office have sparked opposition from many residents.

Under new proposals, the post office would move into the Forge Shop on the A422, but concerns have been raised about safety.

Many fear that with the shop already busy, adding a post office is going to make the area more dangerous.

Local resident Eileen Gibbs said: “The main reasons against the relocation are of safety with so much traffic, some of it being lorries travelling fast by the narrow pavements, especially at school times.

“Residents say the two shops being put into one will cause an accident. In fact, they say it is an accident waiting to happen.”

After a questionnaire into the plans, Ms Gibbs said the responses were 245 against the move and only two in favour.

However, parish councillor Rodger Fooks said: “We are caught between a rock and a hard place. I know residents value an independent post office but there is a national trend to move them into commercial premises.”

District and parish councillor Audrey Steel agreed and said the move should be welcomed by residents: “Where the post office is at the moment there isn’t any parking, people have to park in the road. At the shop there are at least be parking bays,” she said.

“The shop had been for sale for five years and we are extremely lucky to have found someone to take it and the post office on.

“It’s a case of use it or lose it, both for the shop and the post office.”

A Post Office spokesperson, said: “The public consultation on the proposed relocation of Inkberrow Post Office ended on July 9, and we will consider all feedback received and would hope to reach a decision shortly.”
