Troublesome tenant evicted from flat

Redditch Editorial 16th Jul, 2014 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

A BATCHLEY man has been evicted from his council flat after a spate of unruly behaviour and repeatedly damaging it.

Simon Hughes, from Salters Lane, was handed an Anti Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) at Worcester Magistrates’ Court last Friday (July 11).

District Judge Nadeem Khan also approved a Possession Order in the absence of the 40-year-old.

It followed an application by Redditch Borough Council which worked with West Mercia Police to bring the case to court.

The court heard how Hughes’ had several reports against him for a string of anti-social behaviour, while the flat he rented from the council was continuously and extensively damaged.

The ASBO prohibits him from causing or encouraging anyone else to cause harassment, alarm, distress, intimidation or threats, as well as damaging property.

The council will seize the flat and he is also banned from entering Salters Lane between Hewell Road and Oak Tree Avenue.

The restrictions will last until a further court order is made and breaching them will be a criminal offence.

Liz Bellaby, Redditch Borough Council’s anti-social behaviour manager, said: “We have had to move to protect the community from extreme behaviour and prevent any further damage to council property.

“Unfortunately all of our efforts, as well as those of other agencies, to help with underlying problems in this case were unsuccessful leading to this formal action.

“Residents should know that where it is necessary to protect the community, the council will take these steps.”
