Village hall tops poll for community cash

A VILLAGE hall has won a cash boost from a housing developer after being voted for by Standard readers.

Webheath Village Hall has been awarded £500 for winning the public’s support in the Taylor Wimpey Community Chest scheme. Readers were invited to nominate a worthwhile local cause and then vote for their favourite with the Heathfield Road hall topping the poll.

Committee members will use the cash to refurbish the ladies’ toilets and generally spruce up the building which was built in 1925 and is run entirely by just seven volunteers, who rely on donations and hiring fees to keep it running.

The hall is a focal point for the community hosting toddler clubs, keep fit classes as well as meetings for the Women’s Institute and The Redditch Association for the Blind.

But as it is mainly made of wood requires continual refurbishment.

Fred Tebbs, chairman of Webheath Village Hall, said: “We want to thank all of the local residents who decided to vote for us. It’s a lovely feeling to know we give something to the public, and now the public want to give something back to us.

“We feel quite humbled to have won the award, especially up against other brilliant causes, but this generous donation from Taylor Wimpey is a complete blessing for us and we’re extremely grateful.

“We have groups coming from all over Redditch to use our hall, and it’s a fantastic boost for our finances which will make the venue a better, more modern place for people to enjoy.”

Anne Wallace, regional sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey which currently has homes for sale on its new Lucet Meadow development in Woodrow, said: “We are delighted to be donating £500 to Webheath Village Hall through our Community Chest initiative, after the readers of the Redditch Standard voted it as the cause most deserving of this funding.

“This wonderful organisation does so much for such a wide variety of groups across the area, and we are very pleased to be able to offer our support to this worthy local venue.”
