Worcestershire in the midst of a gaming boom

Redditch Editorial 25th Jun, 2025   0

As one of the most historic counties in the United Kingdom, it may seem unusual to describe Worcestershire as thriving modern-day gaming hub.

However, much like many other regions, Worcestershire is in the midst of a gaming boom which has the potential to significantly impact the local economy.

With that in mind, read on as we look how the county is embracing this highly lucrative sector, starting with the associated iGaming industry.

Locals clamour to visit iGaming platforms

Advancements in technology and improved Wi-Fi connectivity have helped iGaming become a mainstream entertainment activity with people across the UK.

Many players in the Worcestershire region have leveraged European roulette tips to become experts at the iconic casino game over the past few years.

Recent figures published by the UK Gambling Commission show that 242,022,425 bets were placed on gaming sites (including casino) in March 2025.

That figure demonstrates just how popular iGaming has become and the sector’s success is unlikely to diminish for the foreseeable future.

Arcades make a comeback in Worcester

High Score Arcades recently opened a new venue in Worcester, bringing a nostalgic yet modern arcade experience to locals and visitors alike.

The arcade, located in The Shambles, follows High Score’s ‘free play’ model, where customers are a charged a set admission fee for unlimited access to the games.

Whether you are a fan of retro arcade games or something a little more modern, the venue is a great place to socialise with family or friends.

High Score already has arcades in Swindon, Newbury and High Wycombe, where the immersive social gaming experience has proved to be a massive hit.

University is driving gaming innovation

The University of Worcester offers several exciting courses which provide undergraduates with the necessary skills to forge a career in the gaming industry.

One of the most popular is Animation and Game Art, which are complimentary disciplines that combine creativity with cutting-edge technology and tools.

The full-time three-year course takes a practical approach through the use of industry-standard equipment in dedicated studios.

The award-winning teaching team boast a wealth of experience in the sector and can open doors to a wealth of career opportunities in gaming.

Board games are thriving again

The global success of online gaming has triggered an unlikely resurgence in the popularity of iconic board games over the past few years.

Worcester has not been immune to this, with many locals eager to recapture their youth by engaging in competitive board gaming sessions.

The city’s only dedicated board game cafe – The Dice Box – has introduced a new space for people wanting a private and relaxed gaming experience.

The Library is separate from the main cafe, and can seat up to 24 guests across three tables. It is the ideal spot for team-building sessions, family events and more.

Online gaming business spreads its wings

An online business plans to capitalise on the global gaming boom by opening its first ever physical stores in Malvern and Worcester.

Nerdworks will open two stores in the county selling Warhammer collectibles, Star Wars Memorabilia, gaming consoles, games and accessories.

The stores were originally scheduled to open in April, but the owners recently confirmed that construction delays have scuppered their plans.

The Worcester store will now open in mid-July, while the Malvern store has been suspended until first one is up and running.
