GO TO the left of Blues, to the right of folk and round the corner from Jazz and you’ll find Mumbo-Jumbo – who play the Room Upstairs at the Palace Theatre, Redditch a week next Friday, April 8.
The three piece band, featuring Phil Bond on piano, Chris Lomas on ukulele and guitars, and Oliver Carpenter on trombone and percussion, play, in their own words, ‘an eclectic mix of music with a rootsy, folky, bluesy vibe.
Shortlisted in the songwriting category of the British Blues Awards for ‘Nice Work’ – which incidentally isn’t a Blues song – they are a Midlands based trio that have gigged from Lancashire in the north to Chichester to the south and have reached a degree of success where the music is more than taking over their lives.
“We’ve been going for five years and played a lot of festivals and the fruits of that are two CDs chock full of our own music,” said Oliver.
Listening to their songs on YouTube it’s easy to hear that they bring a real sense of fun and harmony to their sound, it may not top the charts, but it’s enough to bring a smile to anyone’s face, get their toes tapping and calling for more.
As such it promises to be a great gig at the Palace – and the Redditch Standard has been lucky enough to procure two pairs of tickets and two copies of their latest CD ‘Sonic Gumbo’ to give away in a competition.
To enter, simply tell us the name of the famous British ukulele and banjolele player who was born in Wigan in 1904.
