A THANKFUL father is lacing up his trainers to raise money for The Birmingham Children’s Hospital after they treated his daughter.

Ben Oakey, of Headless Cross, will be taking part in the London Marathon on Sunday, April 24 and is hoping to raise more than £3,000 for the hospital plus the charity Children with Cancer UK after they helped his daughter.

The father of two has spent a long time in the hospital visiting his daughter with constant return visits and he said all the staff were fantastic.

“I really can’t praise them enough. The work they do there is just amazing and the running costs are immense,” he said.

“This is just a way of giving back and saying ‘thank you’ for all the amazing and fantastic work they do.”

The 33-year-old has been training tirelessly for the last 12 months and has already managed to raise £2,500 for the cause which is close to his heart.

“It is all starting to get very real now that it is only weeks away,” he said.

“You don’t think about it when you are out in the rain running at night but now they have started sending through the schedule it’s hit home.

“I have completed 20 miles so far in one run and I am looking forward to the marathon but I don’t think I will be doing it again.”
