Brilliant music, stunning dance in Still Life at the Penguin Cafe

BIRMINGHAM Royal Ballet performs its iconic Still Life at the Penguin Café in a mixed programme at the Birmingham Hippodrome this week.

The programme kicks off when youthful energy and technical precision collide in Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto.

Set to Shostakovich’s sumptious Piano Concerto No2 MacMillan’s sprightly and vigorous choreography conveys the infectious joy of dancing.

Then a colourful host of endangered animals seek shelter from the storm at the Penguin Café.

Featuring a Morris dancing flea, a ballroom-dancing ram, a woolly monkey and many more, ‘Still Life’ at the Penguin Café is a witty and poignant look at man’s effect on the natural world.

The evening is completed by MacMillan’s playful Elite Syncopations, where a host of eccentric characters flirt, dance and vie for the limelight, accompanied by Scott Joplin’s iconic music.

Performances feature live music from the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, conducted by Paul Murphy and Philip Ellis.

The show runs from Wednesday, September 27 to Saturday, September 30 and tickets start from just £5.
