Double bill of delights set to kick off Astwood Bank carnival season in style

ASTWOOD Bank Operatic Society is helping to kick off the Astwood Bank Carnival season with a double bill of Sullivan without Gilbert: Two comic short shows – Cox and Box and The Zoo.

Cox and Box is what happens when an unscrupulous landlord is discovered double letting his rooms – Mr Cox and Mr Box separately work days and nights and only ever meet on the stairs – until the day one of them gets a day off ……

The Zoo tells two intertwined love stories: Two lovers who can’t marry because her miserable father doesn’t think him good enough; and the rich aristocrat who is looking for a nice simple, ‘ordinary’ girl to marry, and they both get more than they both bargain for.

“It’s light-hearted summer fun so please come along and enjoy,” said director Steve Skinner.

“We try to add some different colour / diversity to the local amateur operatic scene, offering a repertoire the other excellent local societies don’t normally provide.

“Not box-office blockbusters these days maybe, but nonetheless high quality music and drama by top composers and writers – and a culture worth preserving.

“We also like to give something back to the village with whom we share a name.”

The double bills are on Friday and Saturday, July 6-7 at St Matthias & St George Church in Church Road, Astwood Bank, and tickets are £10 with children under 12 free.
