Calls for concentration after police pull over drivers on their phones, watching TV and reading papers on region's motorways

CENTRAL Motorway Police Group yesterday urged drivers in the region to concentrate more on the road rather than other activities.

Officers said in the past two days they had had to deal with far too many motorists engrossed in distractions.

They said they ranged from the usual handheld mobile phone calls to some even reading newspapers and one watching TV on his phone.

One lorry driver was on the phone for a whole ten seconds while CMPG officers were next to him with their blue lights and sirens on before he noticed.

Other incidents included drivers speeding, not wearing seatbelts, not having insurance and vehicles being over-loaded or with unsafe roads.

This week police forces across the country have been backing Project EDWARD – Every Day Without a Road Death. It encourages all road users to pay more attention to being on the road in a bid to keep themselves and others safer.
