WE are living in times when you have to go for being self-reliant. We have to look for ways to reduce any contact with the world outside our home. This said, we could not think of doing so for all the cases. But we can surely try our best to grow our plants and think of going organic at the same time.
While this may seem apt, if you are in the UK and are in a big city home with a small balcony, you may need help. Do you know many people have started farming from their homes? But if you do not have anything more than a small balcony to sit and have tea, why not convert it to a fully functioning garden or farmland instead? You may not even need 24-hour care and can take some time out every day between your work or when you play at Casimba. Just make sure to pick the right veggies and greens to grow on your balcony.
Tomatoes
One of the easiest crops to grow is tomato. These have a low maintenance factor and can grow even in a small pot or container. It grows fast even if you throw some tomatoes from your kitchen to some soil in a planter.
Strawberries
Do you love strawberries and cannot have enough of those red fruits? It is simple to grow these from your small balconies. Packed in antioxidants and phytonutrients, the fruit is definitely worth growing because of its cost-effectiveness. Choose the sunny side and the lesser windy side of the home balcony to plant it. You may choose from the June-bearing varieties or the ever-bearing ones to suit your needs.
Chillies
Look for a sunny spot to plant the chilli seeds and then watch them germinate. There is a need to use compost with great drainage and patting on to the soil. Certain perennial plants can grow and thrive through the year. Also, some variants may last through the hot and humid seasons. So, plant accordingly and look for the exact soil type before you plant them. It will give you the fruits in time.
Peas
You will be able to harvest the crop in three months, and they grow fast with some care. Spring to the middle of summer is the ideal time for you to plant these peas in small pots and planters. They will need some stakes to support and grow up fast.
Eggplants
The eggplants are the next vegetable that can offer better growth and will not require much care. You will benefit if you choose cloudy and warm weather to plant the seeds. Look out for flea beetles as the crop’s fruit starts blossoming. You may even be able to have the crop covered by mesh or netting to avoid this problem. Go for organic fertilisers if you want the vegetables to be full of nutrition. Remember that eggplants invite bees, but that’s fine since these can help in the pollination process.
With so many options available, you will have your hands full. Among other fruits and berries are blackcurrants, blackberries, coriander, and ginger. Read about these before buying any seeds and match the soil condition and drainage of the planters. Among the herbs, you will quickly grow rosemary, parsley, basil, and celery with ease. These plants even have several benefits and can help keep the home safer besides adding taste to your dish. These crops are easy to plant and would not require you to spend a lot on setting up.
